At
St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System
in Savannah – Clients Learn While
They Exercise
Sarah
is an employee of St. Joseph’s
/Candler Health System in Savannah.
She has had a heart attack and attends
the cardiac rehabilitation program at
Candler Hospital.
When asked how she has
benefited from INTE*VENTCR she said,
“Ask my husband.
I have more energy.
I’m more active, yet I am
able to relax.
My whole attitude has changed.
The program is very
interesting.
I’ve learned a lot about
nutrition and how to eat a low-fat
diet.”
Mike
Wilson, with his mentor, Lisa
Summerford, RN, says, “ I have
really benefited from the program.”
Mike
is a young Chatham County police
officer.
In April of 2000, Mike was
offered the INTE*VENT program free of
charge through Chatham County.
At the time he said he was too
busy to attend the program.
In November of 2000, he had a
heart attack and now he participates
in INTE*VENTCR.
Mike says he enjoys listening
to the audios while he exercises.
He has learned a lot about
healthy nutrition and how to exercise
in a safe and effective manner.
Shannon
Smith, RN,
INTE*VENTCR co-ordinator at St.
Joseph’s /Candler Health System in
Savannah, says, “The one-on-one
education is a great improvement on
the former group education.
Patients seem to prefer to ask
questions individually.
Sometimes, in groups, they are
intimidated and do not feel
comfortable speaking out.
The patients take the
educational kits home and are able to
refer to them at a later time.
Nutrition is a popular topic.
Patients say their families
also benefit from what they are
learning. All cardiac rehab patients complete a health assessment at
the end of the 12-week program.
The evidence shows that
patients benefit from the INTE*VENTCR
program.”
