INTERXVENTUSA  Congratulates Charles Hamilton

Charles says, “ I could have had another stroke or a heart attack, or maybe even be dead by now, if it was not for INTERXVENT.”

Imagine your family and friends saying that “something is just not right” or that you are “acting differently.”  You become concerned when day-to-day job responsibilities become increasingly difficult, whereas before, the daily challenges were tackled promptly and with confidence.  You continue to be unaware of the subtle warning signs that say “something is just not right.”

When Charles Hamilton’s family noticed that he was slurring his speech, they insisted that he seek medical attention.  Charles, age 52, said that he was really unaware of the significance of the symptoms he was experiencing.  When family and friends shared their concerns, he attributed his symptoms to being “overheated.”  The hot summers in Savannah predispose many to heat exhaustion.  Seeking medical attention, he was shocked to hear, “Mr. Hamilton, you have had a stroke!”

News like this is devastating to a father of two children.  Charles wanted to know what he could do to prevent another stroke in the future.  His neurologist, Dr. Richard Bodziner, referred Charles to the INTERXVENTUSA Stroke Risk Reduction Program at the Neurological Institute of Savannah.  Dr. Bodziner recognized that Charles had numerous risk factors for another stroke.  He has already had a stroke, is an African American male with diabetes, and has high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Wallette Widener, MSN, RN, program MENTOR, remembers the phone call she received from Dr. Bodziner regarding Charles.  “He was very concerned about Mr. Hamilton.  He convinced him to take measures to lower his risk for stroke through lifestyle modification and encouraged him to enroll in INTERXVENT.

Charles continues to participate in the INTERVENTUSA Stroke Risk Reduction Program and continues to progress toward his long-term goals.  When asked what he was going to do to reward himself for such great progress, Charles responded, “I truly feel like I am already rewarding myself everyday with a better and longer life.”

After three months of participation in the INTERXVENTUSA Stroke Risk Reduction Program, Charles has lowered his LDL (bad) cholesterol considerably and decreased his triglycerides from 1201 mg/dl to154 mg/dl.  His blood pressure has improved, as well as his blood glucose.  After losing 33 pounds and four and one half inches in his waist and hip measurements, Charles finds that he has far more energy.  Charles says, “I can do things that I could not do for years before I came to INTERXVENT.  I feel so much better now!”
